It didn’t take long to get from Thunder Bluff to the Echo Isles – Ankona took advantage of a wyvern so she could think and plan before getting to her destination. She had information to confirm with the spirits – was Gromnor dead? Was he really in the northern part of the Eastern Kingdoms, somewhere […]

Quick Naming Question
comment Comments Off on Quick Naming Question Written by on May 27, 2009 – 7:33 am

I’ve got an itch for a new character.  This one will be Horde.  I’m pondering a Tauren Hunter (or possibly a Forsaken Warrior).  But I need a name or names and I’m asking for your help!  You guys did so amazing helping me with Annie Mae’s character concept that I’m looking forward to seeing what creative things you come up with for this one.

  1. Nothing with “moo”, “cow”, or “milk” in it (or “dead”, “rot” etc).  This is to be an RP character.
  2. Must start with An- or Ann-

  1. Forsaken warrior – Analeth
    Tauren Hunter – Annarakh

  2. Found your blog via Wowinsider, and I love it! I’m always glad to see more people making the case that RPers can be competent raiders. Also, I would like to personally thank you for not naming your tauren some variation on cows or dairy. It stopped being funny years ago.

Since the whole tauren aesthetic is Native American, perhaps you could find some name that continues that motif. Anejo comes to mind. Or, maybe a nature-y name, the name of a flower or herb or something, like Anise.

For Forsaken, Victorian works, as does goth/emo-type stuff. Ana, Anya, Annalee, Annabell…

  3. Hm. A lot depends on what kind of character you want (not just class and race). Is your Tauren a hunter because she loves animals? Because she needs companionship? Because she needs to be apart from the conflict while still participating? Because she was taught to be in order to serve the tribe, but she secretly wishes she could be something else? (Might be room for the much-maligned melee hunter there, or a hunter blacksmith/engineer.)

A little more about the characters in question would help in choosing names. 🙂

  4. Annoko?

    Sounds Taureny to me…

  5. I’m partial to Antilly, but that’s just me. Probably won’t work for a Tauren though. For a Tauren I’d suggest Annaraje.

  6. @ El Ranchero – Welcome! I’m glad you like the look of things around here, stay awhile – the chocolate cake and fudge pops are in the kitchen! I really like Anejo, off the top of my head. Sadly, I play on an original-release, High Pop RP server (Feathermoon), so names like Ana and Analee are long gone. (Annalira was supposed to be Annalise, but that was taken!).

  7. @Chris – the Tauren is a hunter because she loves being self-sufficient, on her own against the wilds (only not really on her own). She loves the outdoors, and everything in Nature generally. She’s a skinner, and she has a great love for her pet/pets. She likes that what she does serves her people and is in line with the traditions of her Ancestors. In fact, she’s probably got a lot of Druid in there, even if she’s never actually been trained as one 🙂

The Forsaken is harder to pin, and I think she’ll get merged into Rirri Anne, my Deathknight – mostly because I really need to give her a better shot for RP!

  8. @Argalek – oooh – I like Annaraje…

  9. Your Forsaken Warrior should totally be named Antonella.

  10. Hm. In that case, I’m drawn to names like Anaba (“returns from war”), Angeni (“spirit”), and Añuli (“joy” – not quite “An” but close). You might also consider Antje, which is just Dutch for “Anna”. 🙂

  11. @Chris:

Antje has a great ring to it as well – and is nicely Taureny, for some reason. Dunno why I’d not looked at different “names” for Anna!

  12. How about Annataur for the tauren hunter?

Kind of obvious but I think it works. I have a tauren DK called Thanataur which I’m sorta proud of.

  13. Why limit it to female names?

Anders, Anatoly, Andaleth, Anscispar, Angoroth, Andy, Andrew, Anketh…and that’s just off the top of my head…

    >.> Because, as many things as I am good at in RP? I can’t play a believable male character. I can /write/ them? But I can’t do it in real time.

It’s a personal failing. I blame my boobs.

  15. If and when you get your moo-cow hunter started, feel free to look up Oakleigh – my Tauren hunter – if you want advice or company.

Oakleigh, as a side note, was supposed to be “Oakley,” as a sort of homage to the original “Little Sure-Shot,” Annie Oakley. But Oakley on Feathermoon is either on the list of banned names or someone’s bank alt, it seems. I was disappointed, to say the least, and have of late been trying to come up with a new name for the character – that isn’t already taken! 😀

  16. @Phileas:

Right now I’ve got the name Antje saved – that’s been my favorite so far. I’ll look up Oakleigh. Have you thought about finding out what “sureshot” is in “Taurahe”? THat might give you an awesome name, and it’d still fit 🙂

Just have to decide what Antje looks like, and what kind of a pet I want her to get – I think a wolf, at least at first. 🙂

  17. I think it’s the Prairie Wolves in Mulgore than bark when tamed if you click on them. 🙂

But if there’s a particular skin of wolf you want that’s not local for young Tauren, tell me, and I’ll help you get out to where you want to go to tame one.

I’ve been considering finding another variant on “Oak-” something, since that’s what she’s called for short…and Light knows she can be as stubborn and unbendable as one. Oakleaf, maybe, if it’s available.

  18. Yay for more Hordeside Anna! Look me up if you need blenders/itamz/snarkery.

  19. @Phileas:

That’s a pretty good reason to tame one! I’ll probably start there XD Need to hit the grocery store quick though, before i can log in.

Yus! I’m in the Tawa channel already!

  20. What is her background? Does she come from a tribe that they were named after a happening? a character trait? What did her parents think when she was born? Is it supposed to be her birth name or her earned name? (questing and all that)

Annatheron – theron means hunter in Greek
Annarei – rei means beautiful/lovely in Japanese
Annali – li means black in Chinese (black as in evil, or black as in the color of the fur if it were to become a black tauren)

    Just some questions…

    Forsaken: Annatelle

  22. Darn you, Chris! You took my ideas for native American names!

Fine then, I’ll take the Forsaken ones.

Angier: Mutation of Asgeir, meaning ‘Spear of God’. You could do worse than that for a Forsaken.

    But my favorite:

Angrona: Steal from Agrona, mutated slightly. The Celtic goddess of war and death. Name literally means ‘carnage’.

Tauren, I think Annache, Forsaken, I think Andarah.
Good luck, and apologies if this is too late! 🙂

Asaras last blog post..What a morning.

  26. @Asara:

I like Annahe as well – maybe I’ll need another tauren in the future 🙂 For now though, I’ve gone with Annaje, and I’m working on her history and her last name!

  27. (Long time read, first time poster, great blog and always an engaging read. 🙂

As for names.. Hmm, names, names..

Annreitsin, Angrim, Annastra, Anovar, Antir, Annfir, Anness, Annbar, Anzefir, Annloz, Anquist, Annet, Annista, Annlore, Analar, Annfray, Anmira, Anvis, Ansook, Annrai, Anala, Annierath, Annmaloo, Annstara, Annlaine.

  28. If you’re looking for a last name for a tauren, you could look at the tribe names. The big ones are Ragetotem, Winterhoof, Mistrunner, Runetotem, Thunderhorn, Bloodhoof and Wildmane. All are tribes with a lot of individuals in them, so it’s likely Annaje is from one of those tribes; in fact I’m fairly sure those tribes make up a large portion of tauren.

Tauren from each of the tribes are generally known for certain characteristics, traits that run in the family. Some tauren will break the mold, but they’re normally the exception, not the rule. The two tribes most known for their hunters seem to be the Thunderhorns and the Wildmanes. Personality wise, Annaje sounds most like somebody from either the Thunderhorns or the Runetotems. The Wildmane tribe seems less likely; they hunt a lot, but they tend to be a lot more wild than the rest of their kin and they seem to have the most warriors and fighters out of any tribe after the Grimtotem and Ragetotem as well. Wild and aggressive doesn’t seem quite what you’re going for.

Generally, Runetotems tend to be quiet and peaceful. When I’ve interacted with tauren NPCs myself, they tend to seem the least “fighter” out of all the tribes. They’re often described as patient and hesitant to use force, though that isn’t to say they won’t fight if they think it necessary. It’s also worth noting that they appear to make up a large portion of tauren druids – the tauren archdruid is himself a Runetotem. Most of them appear to be druids, although that isn’t to say there aren’t non-druids in the tribe.

The Thunderhorns might be the closest fit, depending on how Annaje turns out. A very large portion of their tribe seems to be hunters, without the more aggressive nature of the Wildmanes. They seem to be very self-sufficient and a bit independent, while still fitting into the general mentality of the tauren, peaceful unless provoked, honoring their ancestors, and so on. Annaje might fit in with them, or her slightly druid-ish nature might bring her closer to the Runetotems.

None of these are hard and fast rules of course. They should give you ideas to work with, though. It is possible for a very quiet, shy individual to grow up among Ragetotems, though probably ending up a misfit. One certain rule though is to be prepared for some social stigma if you play a Grimtotem; the fact they’re often hostile tends to be a turnoff to other tauren. Also, Blogatelle has a nice post on tauren tribe names that forms some of what I learned about the different tribes, I’d suggest looking it up.
