Squire Benjamin William Sullivan stood in the middle of Light’s Hope Chapel in his underpants.

Actually, it was white linen pants and a shift, but the effect was approximately the same. The little chapel was warm, on the edge of …

Character Soundtracks – Update
comment 7 Written by on June 4, 2010 – 9:34 am

A previous Friday Five had us thinking about songs that reminded us of or signified our characters. I wanted to update that a bit, since there are a few new Aely songs running around, plus one or two for Annie Mae.

For Aely:

  1. Miranda Lambert’s The House That Built Me – brought home particularly by the ending of this War in the Frozen North, and her desire to see her home again
  2. Mumford & Sons After the Storm – Another Yva find. Yva is awesome!
  3. Eva Cassidy singing Fields of Gold – Sadly, this one is no longer available online
  4. Warren Zevon Keep Me in Your Heart for Awhile - for Aely and Jolstraer
  5. There are a number of songs for Aely and Arrens, but the one that’s most appropriate right now, since Aely’s at the front full time and only back in Stormwind rarely, is David Cook’s Light On. There are other, happier songs too.

For Angoleth (who isn’t really this sad, but these two songs just fit somehow):

  1. Imogen Heap’s Speeding Cars
  2. Ella Fitzgerald singing ‘Round Midnight – I don’t know the lover that she lost, that’s part of Angoleth’s story that she’s not told me about, but there’s something about this song, its disjointedness, and Angie’s tendency to just wander around at night that makes it work.

For Annie Mae:

  1. Kristy Lee Cook’s Cowgirls
  2. Toby Keith Beer for my Horses

Oh come on, you can’t expect Annie to be anything OTHER than up-tempo country music!

What are the songs you associate with your characters? Obviously for Aely I’ve got a whole soundtrack, but others are just a song or two for when I get into their head (or they get into mine). Do you listen to the songs when you’re playing the character, or is it just an association?

  1. My death knight, Solivar, is also my roleplaying main and has developed his own personal soundtrack since I started playing/writing him regularly. Quickie background: born into a Big Screwed Up Family (in which he was decidedly the Unfavorite compared to his elder brother), ran away to Lordaeron to become a paladin at a scandalously young age, met his best friends/family of choice/One True Love, earns his spurs, ends up being in the wrongest place imaginable while the Scourge is happening, spends the next ten years as the Lich King’s loyal minion, freed, and is now Walking the Earth, attempting to find out what happened to the people he loved and trying to put the world to rights.

Solivar is, by nature, more of an idealist and an optimist than a cynic, despite it all. His current personal theme, when he is at his most peaceful, is Long Long Journey by Enya. (No, really.)

On the other hand, he is not immune to long, dark nights of the soul — particularly when he’s being told that the Light does not abandon its champions…and yet it doesn’t quite feel that way at all. Lux Aeterna, composed by Clint Mansell, is his friend at those times.

And then there are the times when there’s nothing to be done for it but to kick some ass. Often to the tune of ES Posthumous:

  2. Tarq:
“Man With No Country,” Flogging Molly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iGesj94AcQ
“Rake At the Gates of Hell,” The Pogues (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nu3t7dHN2CM)
“The Family Way,” The Men They Couldn’t Hang (can’t find it online, but trust me, it’s awesome.)

    Jak:

  3. I definitely have a strong music/character connection, and I’m guilty of putting together ever-growing playlists that follow my characters’ stories. A few highlights:
    -
    Corise:
    1. “Trouble,” Shawn Colvin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEnfl53HVRY) The lyrics pretty much sum Corise up in a nutshell.
    2. “Wicked Ways,” Garbage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrMilN-PVLU) Corise is a bit of a semi-reformed sinner and still struggles with her inner demons, though she puts on a pretty good front most of the time.
    3. “Hotels,” Juliana Hatfield (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-ER45_I0uM) Post-Gnomeregan. (Juliana’s song “Bad Day” is also perfect for Corise on… well, a bad day, but I couldn’t find it on youtube. Lyrics for that one: http://www.metrolyrics.com/bad-day-lyrics-juliana-hatfield.html)
    -
    Lakena:
    1. “Na Laetha Geal M’Oige,” Enya (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wj9z2KAkoCc) This song very much fits Lakena’s transition into mortality after the loss of the World Tree (lyrics and translation: http://www.metrolyrics.com/na-laetha-geal-maige-lyrics-enya.html)
    2. “Elsewhere,” Sarah McLachlan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iz-xVsO2CWc) Falling in love with a human mage was the catalyst for Lakena discovering that she might want to live her life differently than her parents in more than one way.
    3. “I Will Find You,” Clannad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImorEqx_4-8) This is a very recent addition to the playlist; Lakena has entered the Emerald Dream to rescue her husband, who is trapped within the Nightmare.
    -
    Jenive:
    1. “The Scientist,” as covered by Aimee Mann (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKAik-3zkEI) This is an odd one; it always spoke of Jenive to me, but the lyrics didn’t totally fit – Jenive and Imble are a pretty happy couple (almost sickeningly cute, in fact). Then Imble got lost in the Caverns of Time for several months, and… bam. Perfect song.
    2. “Don’t Let It Bring You Down,” as covered by Annie Lennox (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajn8_ayqRG8) It’s hard for me to put to words why this fits, but this is what it sounds like inside Jenive’s mind.

    2. Eva Cassidy, Stormy Monday http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHWeK8Vheak

    2. Iz, What A Wonderful World http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0xoMhCT-7A

    Indarra:

    1. The Killers, When You Were Young http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3lw8CaDY34
    2. Sting, Fragile http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lB6a-iD6ZOY
    3. Mono, Life in Mono http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KpODDuzlhk
    4. Rolling Stones, Paint it Black http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AdP28V4RiU

  5. Lark

    Arvoss
    Russian Circles- Micah http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4noNh8a5uPE

    Shaurria
    Evanescence- Field of Innocence http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsMx76igw6k

Pitch is being difficult and doesn’t have any songs yet, but I’m still looking. That’s about it for my guys, though I’m sure I’ll be adding to it eventually.

  6. Hmm…haven’t given much thought to a soundtrack before, let’s see what shakes out…

    Khol:
Sentenced – Vengeance is Mine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DVDQwkYRCk (this was actually the initial inspiration for A Stab in the Dark)
    Manowar – The Power of Thy Sword http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Leo1DTmspx4 (because he’s a swordsman…)
Demon Hunter – Not I http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fk_3mA-jQvY (while the song itself has a vastly different meaning, it does represent his struggle against his own darker nature)
Monster Magnet – Unbroken (Hotel Baby), Wall of Fire and Power Trip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4O5epRZ_Zw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJH6W-c-Rgw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByCXe3rrSY8 (the lyrics to this trio of songs have nothing to do with Khol, but the attitude presented are significantly indicative of his personality: cocky, brash and sometimes arrogant)
Lotos, Mordock and Iriandra could easily all have their own soundtrack as well, but that would turn this comment into an epic post.

  7. I don’t have a big list, but it seems like every time I’m playing my DK, Ilithyia, and my iTunes plays the song “I Stand Alone” by Godsmack, it fits her very well. It just feels right. :)
