Last night our 10 man took our first peek into the Dragon Soul raid. It was largely successful, even if we did have a case of the derp for a bit on Zon’ozz.
The third boss of the instance, however, led to one of the more amusing wipes we’ve had as a raid group. Yor’sahj the Unsleeping (henceforth known as Your’socks, thanks to Yva) is an extremely color coordinated sort of boss. He’s the type that has all his clothes arranged by color (Do faceless ones wear clothes?) and each closet has a specifically colored slime/ooze thing to care for it. Periodically he calls up three of those ooze things, and you kill one and let him absorb the other two – the kill priority depends on the nastiness of the absorbs.
Anyway, Your’socks has a mechanic that, whenever he absorbs a purple shadow slime, stacks with healing – at 5 stacks, you explode. Originally, we thought this meant that the fifth heal that each healer cast would cause AOE damage. Everything went along quite swimmingly on our first attempt, until we got a big ugly AOE slime plus a shadow slime, and our holy paladin decided to throw around some Holy Radiance to heal up the raid.
It turns out that it’s the fifth heal cast on each PLAYER that explodes. And that five casts of Holy Radiance each count on each player it hits. And that, in fact, if the entire raid is stacked up to deal with adds and AOE…
10 dead players. Instantly.
All of whom were incredibly confused, as we had the boss at about 30% and had no signs of anything going wrong. 100%-0 in one massive explosion.
Henceforth, on Your’socks, whenever purple slimes are absorbed, we decided NOT to use AOE healing abilities. That was much more successful.
