It didn’t take long to get from Thunder Bluff to the Echo Isles – Ankona took advantage of a wyvern so she could think and plan before getting to her destination. She had information to confirm with the spirits – was Gromnor dead? Was he really in the northern part of the Eastern Kingdoms, somewhere […]

So – I’m tired of just having the two healers at 80.

Unfortunately, I’m also strongly against purchasing characters and paying for power leveling (it’s against the TOS, it’s unsafe, don’t do it).

Which means I either need to get over it… or  I need to level.  In Northrend. But!  I want an 80 priest, and now’s the time to do it, since with the Midsummer Fire Festival going, I can get a 10% XP buff that stacks with the 10% XP shoulders (woo!) plus all of the experience from the various fire quests.

I’ll be using Pookie’s guide to hitting the various fires (Alliance guide, Horde Players can find an excellent rundown on WoWwiki), if only because at level 73, I get around 12K experience for each Alliance fire, and nearly 25K for each Horde fire.  Which is quite a lot, especially considering how slowly Northrend feels like it’s going, and how rested experience buffs are going to be at a premium for a bit.

So wish me luck, and we’ll see how long this goes.  Maybe with a bit of momentum, this’ll go along better.

Oh also – I need a bit of advice.  I’m leveling with a combination of group stuff (with my husband’s rogue) and on my own.  Leveling with the rogue and priest, when I’m specced shadow, is a pain in the butt, since I’m dropping in and out of shadowform. But on my own, shadow was much better than discipline, at least in terms of speed, the last time I was working on it.  What spec do you folks suggest?

  1. Go disc/holy. Only go down in holy far enough to take the instant smite/ flash heal.

I really, really liked a Disc/Holy hybrid for leveling my priest. I tried Shadow when leveling and hated it.

You need to get into Disc far enough to get the reflective shield, and the Holy talents are focused mostly on increasing Holy spell damage. PW:S + Smite Smite Smite becomes your new best friend. Very little down time, too.

Now … I say this, but I notice that my Shadow spec (I am dual specced now) does do a little better damage overall, and doesn’t seem to have a survivability problem, either, but I still prefer the hybrid, for no adequately explainable reason. Sentimental, I suppose.

  3. I went full-on disc on my priest and it was pure sex on legs. YMMV
My recommendation is to first get TourGuide, if you don’t have it already. (http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info7674-TourGuide.html) This is the BEST leveling guide around, imo. I’ve used it for three alts now and with moderate play time (3-4 hours a day M-F, 6-7 weekends) I’ve racked up three and a half 80s (still working on that fourth.) It’s simple, it’s lightweight (none of that QuestHelper bloat) and it works. What more could you ask?
Secondly, don’t go to Northrend until 70 and when you do, take enough time off to build up a full rest bar. This will do two things: one, give you a bit of a break from the hard burn of leveling through OW and BC and two, give you a full rested exp bar, which you probably only start seeing the end of when you get close to 80.

  4. @teh Khol Abides:

My priest is 73, for what it’s worth, and I hate, loathe, abhor, and abominate quest guide mods. I won’t use them. That’s probably the subject of a future blog post.

The problem isn’t efficiency, it’s that I. Hate. Northrend. Which means just chucking in and /doing it/.

  5. I really enjoyed levelling my priest holy (from 1 to 80!). I used a hybridy holy build that I like to call the lolsmite build. Talents have change a bit since, but here’s a good starting point: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#bVcbuZzxtcfbqfkMZG:u

From there, you can fill out the holy tree for CoH and GS, and be pretty close to a serious raiding build. Or you can dabble a bit more with disc and get Soul Warding (which could be pretty funny with B&S). The smite glyph is a must — wish I had it when I levelled!

You’d be surprised how quickly you can kill single mobs with this build, with shielded holy fire and smites. Holy nova offers a bit of AoE and a lot of chances to proc Surge of Light. I never got a chance to play with Body and Soul, but our raid priests seem to have way too much fun with it ^^ I imagine it synergies with a rogue pretty well (speedy stealth!).

Any variation on this build should let you heal any instances and naxx (and prolly a bit of ulduar). With mind sear at 75 (which procs SoL as well!), I wasn’t shy about taking a DPS spot in groups either.

  6. @Poco-Skywall:

I should probably mention here that I raided Karazhan and Gruul/SSC with a LawlSmite DPS build – and held my own pretty well. Especially with the AOE component of holy nova, you had to stack a lot of crit, and a lot of mp5 – and hit rating was at a premium since we didn’t really get much in the way of talents – but it was a really fun build.

As such, I’ve respecced Anaelle to 37/27/0 (level 73) and will be playing with that a bit. If nothing else, it’ll be a change of pace.

  7. If you can dual-box, then it will be Hax too. 🙂

    a) 80 runs instances and kills everything in 10 mins, you get less XP per kill by 20x as many kills.

    b) 80 Healer follows along behind you and heals (best is a druid for HoTs) and you essentially have unlimited life.

  8. I had no idea the XP bonuses stacked. In that case, this is the perfect time for me to stop lamenting that my Shaman is at 80 instead of my Priest and do something about it. As much as I really don’t feel like questing and grinding, I can’t pass up 20% bonus XP with a full rest bar.

  9. My baby druid is in the 40doldrums. I hate the 40’s for some reason. Then the fire festival starts, I get all the EK/Kalimdor fires done and then they fix the quests so people who did em last year can do em and I got to do them all over again! it was something like 7 free levels in 2 days with no actual effort and lots of time AFK to do RL stuff.

  10. disc, with some points in shadow.

there are points in shadow that will boost your DPS, and give you access to things like mind flay, but don’t go all the way down the tree to shadow form. You stay ‘normal form’, and can heal, and also dmaage whatever your rogue is beating on.

disc all the way down to penance is good, as penance is both a heal and offensive spell (dependong on who it’s aimed at).

    have fun!
