It didn’t take long to get from Thunder Bluff to the Echo Isles – Ankona took advantage of a wyvern so she could think and plan before getting to her destination. She had information to confirm with the spirits – was Gromnor dead? Was he really in the northern part of the Eastern Kingdoms, somewhere […]

Fire Festival Shenanigans

firefestival So, I said I was totally uninspired by the Fire Festival.

And really, I am.  But I’m also trying to get a paladin to level 70 by Saturday for an all paladin Karazhan run.  And yesterday I saw a fire outside of Allerian stronghold and thought – what the hell – and “Honored” it.

5500 XP.

Wait… what?  *checks combat log*  5500 XP?  Really?  So I did a quick search, found Siha’s list of Fire Festival Links and realized no – I wasn’t dreaming.  And not only that, but I’d get double that XP for putting out a horde fire…

So I printed off a list – at 11:30pm – and went out looking for trouble.  I figured I’d see how it was going and decide just how into this whole bit I really wanted to get.

4 hours later, I’d gotten enough XP to get me from 40% through 65 to level 66 and a little bit, and enough little fire flowers to buy Aelflaed a really pretty outfit.  She’s thrilled with it – since she’s a clothes horse, and likes unique looking things to wear.

Now, I realize this was probably a little excessive.  And yeah – I should’ve gone to bed.  And no, I won’t be doing this on any other characters, unless the mood strikes me on one of my lowbies (I need gold, but I’m not that desperate, and the XP seems better).  Aelflaed still has a few horde fires to put out, mostly in Outland and/or the starting zones, but I’m not going out of my way for them at this point.

Questing wise, she’s about halfway through Terrokar, so I figure I’m in good shape to stay ahead of the hard quests and blow through things.  Once she hits 70, I’ll either be going full on holy or full on ret, instead of this weird prot/ret hybrid (reckoning/vengeance build) I’ve got going right now, since I’m ok with going a little slower if it means I don’t die every 10 minutes, but my DPS is horrendous.

And she’ll be my third level 70 healer.

Healers – collect the whole set!  My druid is just about level 40…

*Also – the Twisted Nether Blogcast #5 is out – this week with Pike from Aspect of the Hare, and another blogger tip from yours truly!  Enjoy!

  1. 5500XP at L65? Oh. My. I’m trying not to be tempted to use that to my forgotten L62 mage’s advantage (I’m on an alt diet, dangit), but… that would be so useful…

Teu would love that brazier of dancing flames. 😀 Just trying to decide how *much* she’d love it, because 350 blossoms is an awful lot…

  2. Yeah – Annorah would love one too, or the pet (if it were actually a wee fire elemental and not just a red glowy) – she’s got a particular relationship with the element fire.

I just don’t see myself having any desire to do it again. Maybe in a few days (or maybe if we get a group together to go do it).

  3. 5500 XP? Holy catfish. I was going to ignore the event with baby D, but that’s 506,000 XP if you get every single one. I was dashing about Kalimdor last night with big D (collecting blossoms) and there seriously weren’t any Horde about – the effort was entirely painless.

Do you know how much you get for stealing capital fires at level 65ish? WoWHead says 2950, but I suspect it would be more since the revamp. And even though I don’t care about the hat, each one gives you 25 blossoms.

  4. I’m not sure about capital fires, I’ve not gone that route (I’m a total carebear, I know). I’d really like to get Aelflaed the shoes too, but I’m not sure I can scrounge up another 100 flowers unless I do the capital fires though.

  5. I was having a blast doin those quests on Vanova. Im a secret world PvPer at heart and we had a pitched battle in Winterspring the other day as I put out the fire outside everlook just as a BE shadow priest landed there. Before we knew what happened there were a dozen combatants in a fight which lasted until someone accidentally chain lightninged the horde flight master (*cough*I may have been the only shaman*cough*).

Re Paladining. Ret is extremely gear dependant and to a certain amount, class mix dependant. However, it scales well – every single talent you normally pick up is a % boost. Dont be afraid to snag “hunter” style mail initially as you’re gearing up and where possible you want to group with one or more of:

    – another paladin (Might and Wisdom together help your DPS a lot, kings becomes more useful as your gear gets better, more specifically as your strength scales past 400-500. Salvation is a necessity as well depending on who’s tanking)
    – Shaman, preferably Enhancement. SoA, Mana Spring, GoA totems are all amazing as is a 10% AP boost from a enhancement shammy. However, Windfury is just sick. For Mac its easily a 200DPS boost.
    – Warrior, Battle shout is amazing. Arms warriors stack well with Ret due to blood frenzy.
    – Shadow priests, the constant mana regen helps spam DPS abilities you often cant spam – namely consecration.

Sadly, in a group full of casters, we really dont perform well.

I think the main thing about ret is to stick at it if you want to do it. Gearing up for an off-spec at this late stage of BC is going to be a lot trickier than it was when I was prot.

  6. Yeah – right now I’m playing a relatively odd build that’s not the highest DPS in a group, but reckoning is *nice* for soloing. I really don’t see Aelflaed tanking (ever), but I CAN see her either being ret or healing, so I’m focusing on those two sets right now. She’s such a 4th string alt, though, that I really don’t see her getting much in the way of real gear unless I get super lucky.

Also – healing is kind of my go-to spec, since I’m very comfortable in that role, and I’m good at it – melee DPS is a step out of my comfort zone most of the time.

The gear dependency thing is something I noticed right away though, so I’ve made sure I”ve had good solid weapons at least for leveling. Right now I’ve got a Halaani Claymore (80ish DPS) and it’s quite nice.

  7. …that much XP seriously?

    *eyes her Outlands alt*

  8. This just in! With my level 64 mage, each of the capital city fires was worth 8050 XP. The Alliance fires were 5400, and the Horde fires were 10,750. The initial Torch Tossing and Torch Catching quests were also each 10,750. So now you know. This event was made for leveling. O.O

  9. Also – the lowbie “Earthen Ring” quests were worth 11,600 XP at 67 – and there were 4 of them. The fourth is a repeatable daily quest in Hellfire Peninsula.
