Hehe, Anna. As you know Im a grumpy old bastard. I have a lot of opinions on many things but - and this is especially true of pugs - communication is the thing that fails and why pugs frequently have problems.

I have some basic expectations. The most basic one is that if you dont know something about the encounter or instance, ask.

More communication stuff and mostly from a tanks perspective:
- Healers. When Im tanking talk to me. I run with a lot of different people with different classes, gear, specs and comfort zones. I know my limits, but tell me yours. Healers get a good feel for their tank pretty quickly. If Im DPSing and die, well thats my own bloody fault and I deserve the repair bill. If I die as a tank then there are some issues that need sorting out (even if its just lag)
- DPS, when Im tanking, talk to me. If moving a mob two feet to the left would make your job easier, tell me. I /only/ know melee DPS and really only paladin DPS
- CCers, talk to me. Every bloody thing changed with 3.0 and Im having enough fun relearning my class. If you can now CC that dargon when you couldnt before, let me know

So many issues and hassles could be solved by simply saying something. Also listening to whats being said helps.

Oh, one final healer rant. I thought we'd learned this in BC but apparently not. Please dont stand in the fire

Rilgon, you're calling up a legion of hypothetical scenarios drawn from your own experience to contest this. Yes, if you're doubling the damage of another DPSer in the group then your underleveled pet isn't the biggest problem. Yes, if you're blowing through the instance regardless, then go ahead and level your new kitty or whatnot. I think it's pretty clear that this isn't what Anna is talking about.

If a hunter's group is wiping, on the other hand, and he's running around with a level 75 pet, then damn right he should go get the appropriate pet. Just as the rogue in the group should be spec'd for the weapons he's maxed out his skill with, not levelling a backup weapon for shits and giggles; just as the healer should spec for healing, not just roll in as a hybrid in healy gear.

All these things are of course perfectly possible depending on the difficulty of the instance and the gear, composition, and skill of the group. God knows I've spent enough time leveling thrown or swords on joke fights. But if the group is dying, I put on my big boy pants. That's what this post is about.

Not to add more fuel to the argument, but allow me to elaborate on some of your observations of hunter pets. However, also understand that I have not seen heroics yet, so I can't be speaking for hunters everywhere.

The classification of pets into Tenacity, Ferocity, and Cunning has allowed hunters to use exclusively Tenacity pets to maximize their leveling speed due to the ease of pet tanking. As a result, switching between all our pets while leveling to ensure everyone is at the same level will actually hamper our ability to quest efficiently.

I often switch out my Tenacity pet with my Ferocity pet when going into instances. However, the time I spend in instances is far less compared to when I am questing, thus it is bound to happen that our Ferocity pets will be left behind in terms of level. But this does not necessarily mean they cannot live up to their expectations. I can personally state that I made two runs in Violet Hold as a level 74. The first time, I outDPS'd a 79 shadow priest by 160 using a level 70 cat. The second time, my DPS was on par with a level 80 enhancement shaman and a 79 fire mage. However, as Rilgon has also admitted, I am a Marksmanship hunter.

It is not by choice that we enter instances with sub-level pets. The game mechanics unfortunately makes it unfavorable to use Ferocity pets while leveling, likewise when using a correct-level Tenacity pet for heroics DPS. The observations you make is only a phase due to the "lag". In a few weeks, you will see these trends disappearing.
