2.4 (Resto) Shaman Changes

A look at some of the changes that I find particularly nummy as a Resto shaman.

Chain Lightning: This ability will no longer jump to secondary targets which are under the effect of crowd-control spells that break on taking damage. i.e. Polymorph, Sap, etc.

Yay :D I know this isn’t much of a resto talent, but I still like this one (much as I like the change to multi shot). Only, now I can’t break the sheeps in the trash pulls before Leotheras and make things more… er… interesting…

Earth Shield: Mana cost reduced roughly in half, and charges reduced from 10 to 6

An interesting change – useful for times when you only need to shield someone temporarily (healers with inner demons in Leo) but kind of a pain in the arse for longer fights like Tidewalker where I’m far away from the MT and will have to keep running back to cast it on him. In the end, I think this works out to be a resto buff, since it does reduce the mana by more than it reduces the charges.

Ghost Wolf: Cast time reduced to 2 seconds, down from 3.

May seem useless to a shaman at level 70. Any shaman not level 70 now has *no excuse* for not having the improved ghost wolf talent. Insta-speedy-doggy form. Go! (also useful in Arenas and PVP, but I don’t do much of either with the shaman anymore)

The Global Cooldown of all Totems has been reduced to 1 seconds, down from 1.5 seconds.

Can I get an *AMEN*? Farking *finally* – one of my biggest peeves as a shaman healer is that it takes me a full 8 seconds to get myself into a fight properly. Run up (since I have to get the totems in melee range) drop 4 totems, back out – and *then* start healing. I know the other healers in the raid can hang without me for that bit, but if a weird damage spike happens usually I’m the farthest healer forward, and it’ll be nice to have better reaction times on this stuff. YAY!

Healing Grace: This talent now reduces the chance your spells will be dispelled by 10/20/30%.The resistance to being dispelled modifier from this talent now applies correctly to Water Breathing.

PVP change. Nice. Not all that useful to me.

Totem timer icons will now show up under your player portrait when you cast totem spells. Right-clicking a totem timer icon will destroy that totem.

Good call on Blizz’s part – we’ll see how useful that ends up being. Particularly with totemic call. Will this eliminate the need for that talent (which destroys all active totems, learnable at level 30), or will this change only destroy totems after level 30? I’m not sure what to make of this one, other than that the UI change is definitely a good one.

Toughness will now also reduce the duration of movement slowing effects on you by 10/20/30/40/50%.

Ok – this isn’t a resto change. but Blizzard *finally* fixed a 5 point talent in the enhancement tree that really had no place being there. Toughness was a holdover from the days when there were shaman tanks (increasing armor value). This seems to be a good match with the resto talent that reduces silencing effects, and also will be a nice buff for PVP enhancement shammies, helping with the kiting issue.

Tremor Totem now pulses every 3 seconds, down from 4 seconds.

Nice little buff. Yay tremor totem!

There are a TON of other changes (you can see the 2.4 notes here) but I’ll leave those to others who are more qualified to deal with them. For now, I’m just hoping my UI will be in some semblance of workable order – gogo ace2 updaters! – and that I don’t have any major issues.

  1. Agreed. I am really looking forward to the new patch and some of these changes — especially the totem cooldown and chain lightning fix!!!

  2. I’m fairly sure the changes to Chain Lightning (and Multi-shot, etc) were reverted before the patch was released.

    Also, the destroying the totems individually does not return mana like totemic recall does.
