The morning of the all hands summon to the Blasted Lands, Aely went for a walk. The late fall air was clear and cool, and leaves crunched under their feet in the less-traveled parts of the streets. She and Roger took the long way around Old Town, south through Tanner Circle and down Bulwarks, across […]

Memorial Day

There isn’t an in-game holiday for Memorial Day.

I find that somewhat sad, really, considering all of the other western holidays in WoW – but I suppose we remember them near Veteran’s Day for the Ancestor Festival.  Either way though, this post is here to remind you that even without an in-game holiday, there’s an out of game event that’s worth mentioning.

And among the things worth mentioning are all the folks in the armed forces that play WoW – either while they’re home on leave, or at odd hours when they can squeeze in a bit of time with ping of less than 4K to do a daily or two.  These are the paladin in your PuG, the rogue in the EotS game, the priest that’s a sub for your raid, the death knight that’s fishing next to you in wintergrasp – folks that put their lives on the line for the country they serve (and not all of them are from the US).

Today is about honoring those who have given their lives in the service of others.  For the Uther Lightbringers and Orgrim Doomhammers as well as the Dwarven Mortar teams and the Goblin Zeppelin Pilots of the real world – all the way down to the rank and file Footmen and Grunts who do the day-in day-out work to keep us all living the lives that we choose to live.

But, at least for me, it’s also about the Big Bear Butts, the Aridins, the Jackpots, the Zeligs (Hi Zelig!), the Conneurs,  the Airman Howells, the Kestrels, the Dechions, and the Buttons of the world – those men and women who either have served or are serving in the armed forces today.

So here’s to all of you.  You have my utmost respect and my thanks.

(And any of you reading who fit in that category, consider this directed at you too, even if I don’t know or didn’t remember your name.)

  3. What’s Memorial Day? Oh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorial_Day)

If we had one ingame it should be called ANZAC Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANZAC_Day) and be around the 25th April. :-)

I like your sentiment but don’t forget there are a lot of players (westerners or otherwise) who aren’t from North America.

  5. There is a holiday that evokes the themes of Memorial day, they just have it as the harvest festival in the autumn, where you can sit and eat with the ghosts of the fallen heroes, as well as do the quests for Uther and Grom Hellsream. :)

  6. Virtually every civilised nation in the world has some form of holiday for commemorating the men and women who died in service to their nation. It would be nice to see something similar in Azeroth, particularly in the wake of the Wrathgate. Whether you call it Memorial Day, ANZAC Day, Remembrance Day or whatever, putting aside time to honour the sacrifices made by fallen soldiers is least those of us who directly benefit from their deaths can do.

  7. @teh Khol Abides – yeah true. Seems like the sort of thing that would fit into Azeroth too.

  8. Memorial Day isn’t an international holiday though. Over here in the Netherlands it says nothing to us. All the wow holidays seem to be more internationally recognized holidays.

But hey, if we do go more local/national I could definitely come up with a couple of extra holidays we have here ^_^

  9. Athryn is right. There is the Harvest Festival (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/events/harvestfestival/) which is to honour fallen heroes (more specifically, Uther and Grom Hellscream). The type of holiday according to the WoW page is “Memorial Holiday”. It’s true, it does not take place on the American Memorial Day holiday, it is held from September 8 – 13 and not specific to any country. We have our Holiday on November 11 and it’s called Remembrance Day.

They could of course expand on this holiday, as most people probably don’t do the quests involved and just enjoy the free food – but it’s there.
