Resto Shaman vs. The Lurker Below - a Healing Guide

Posted on April 15, 2008 - Filed Under Guides, Healing, Raiding, Shaman

This is the second in a series of posts covering resto-shaman-specific information for tier4 and tier5 boss fights. It will NOT be a boss kill strategy, rather a list of tips and tricks for your friendly neighborhood shaman to make these fights run a little more smoothly.

Other Tuesday guides: Karathress, Leotheras, Hydross, Tidewalker.

So your raid leader announced that next raid you’ll be taking on The Lurker Below. This may well be your first boss to tackle in tier 5 content, especially if your tanks can’t quite muster the resistances for Hydross yet. Lurker is large, toothy, and generally pissed off that you fished him out of his happy hidey hole and into a donut of boiling water. (And yes, he is the same model as Tethyr, the sea monster that attacks Theramore)

The Lurker Below Basics:fishing

Group Considerations: None on this fight, unless the length of the fight makes mana regen a problem for other healers, in which case, a stacked healer group with a shaman or a shadow priest is a good idea.

totem Totems: Drop whatever totems are appropriate for your group.

Heroism/Bloodlust? Usually near the end of the fight, immediately after an add phase and the following spout. Once the tank has solid aggro, burn heroism - especially if you’re in a melee group. If you have a substantial number of dead DPS entering an add/Naga phase, you may want to try heroism then, to get them down before Lurker gets back, but usually its best spent on actual Lurker DPS.

Earthshield: On the main tank during Lurker Phase. On either a tank, or a mage that is sheeping adds during the Naga Phase.

Don’t stand in the…. SPOUT. You can’t heal if you’re dead. ’nuff said.

Shaman Friendly or Unfriendly? Friendly. The melee are usually all standing in a little clump, and they’re getting hit by periodic whirlwind damage. Then everyone hops into the boiling water and the WHOLE RAID takes periodic scalding damage. Use a lower rank of chain heal (rank2) of chain heal for the spout phases, higher rank (rank4) for healing the melee.

Other considerations:

IN THE WATER. NOW!

Seconded! Do NOT try to run from the spout, and don’t let anyone in the raid do it either. The boiling water hurts less than dead.

There is also a sweet spot under the ring that you stand on, if you swim under it you can heal the MT without LOS issues! Woot!

Unquestionably, the single hardest part of this fight is getting back out of the water after a spout. One of the best tricks I’ve found is strafe-jumping back onto the islands vs. swimming straight towards it and jumping - it’ll prevent you from being pushed under the island.

Excellent points, Boudi and Grizz - added to the “other notes” section!

Remember to tell your druids not to heal lurker naked…
