ABC’s of Raid Healing

Posted on June 2, 2008 - Filed Under Healing, Raiding

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA I’m not much of a night owl, and I try to get my posts written during the day, but sometimes I’m up late working on something that’s got me particularly wrapped up. And, if I’m working on the blog, I’m nearly always in the Blog Azeroth chatroom, even if nobody else is around. Which is what I expected at two o’clock on a Saturday morning.

Oddly enough Matticus was still awake, mentioning bits and bobs about Age of Conan and a post he was working on about the ABC’s of raid healing, and did anyone want to help?

Well, I was fried from raiding and writing up three Karazhan guide posts in two hours, so I figured why not, caught the frisbee’d Prayer of Mending, and whipped up half an alphabet’s worth of raiding aphorisms - some more serious than others, I’ll admit. Here’s my half - I drew the odd letters, go see the even half over at World of Matticus!

Always keep a priest or two around. They’re incredibly powerful, and that prayer of fortitude thing is good stuff!

Consumables are your friends - don’t leave Shattrath without them.

Expect excellence, especially of yourself. Bring your A-game to the raid.

Get creative. Why keep doing something that didn’t work?

Im in ur raids, healin ur mans. (you didn’t roll a <insert class> to be <insert DPS spec>, did you?)

Know thyself. Be aware of your strengths and weaknesses. Use your strong points to heal on progression, work on your weaknesses on farmed content.

MOVE! A dead healer heals no mans - don’t stand in the fire/cleave/explosion/shatter/volcano.

Own up to your mistakes. You’ll learn more, be less likely to do the same thing again, the raid leader will appreciate the honesty, and you might help someone else not do the same dumb thing you just did.

Quit’cher Bitchin! Sometimes raiding is hard, and sometimes raiding means wipes. Pick yourself (and everyone else) up and learn from your mistakes.

Speak up. Communication is key, and if you see a problem, use the most appropriate avenue to bring that problem to the attention of the healer lead.

When in doubt, bring a druid. Not only are they fantastic at keeping tanks alive, but they take some of the pressure off all of the other healers.

You can never have too many paladins. Great buffs, great healing, and shiny too!

And most importantly, have fun. This is a game, after all. In the end, some aspect of raiding should be fun (even if it’s not fun 12 wipes into a progression night). Being a healer is incredibly rewarding, incredibly frustrating, and incredibly challenging - sometimes all in the span of 5 minutes!

As always, I really enjoyed this post, particularly the praise for resto druid, as I count myself among the leafy. I’m not sure if I’ve commented here before, but I have been referring my guild’s resto shamans to your website for some time. I like the mix of lighthearted topics with nuts-and-bolts tips on raiding.

After reading both posts, I see no “letter T”. I’m drooling just thinking about what it might say!
