It didn’t take long to get from Thunder Bluff to the Echo Isles – Ankona took advantage of a wyvern so she could think and plan before getting to her destination. She had information to confirm with the spirits – was Gromnor dead? Was he really in the northern part of the Eastern Kingdoms, somewhere […]

I have a secret…

It’s a very timely little secret, given the near-fanatical ravings flying around recently about what may or may not be be happening in the upcoming expansion and whether it does or does not suck and if it may or may not totally destroy the game.

I’m not interested in the WoW news that will get announced at Blizzcon.

Quite frankly, I don’t really care. I haven’t even read the “leaks” posted on MMO-Champion!

Now – before you tar and feather me for being a heretic that doesn’t worship at the feet of the next expansion, hear me out on this one.

I’m not interested in the next expansion because I’m too busy playing this one.

I’ve got RP to work out, raids to help organize, healing to do, alts to level, and just frankly too much stuff that I want to do NOW in Wrath of the Lich King.  We’re learning a new instance, Aely’s knee deep in RP (and seriously worried about something called “Yumm-Saron Veggie Stew”… don’t ask), and Annie Mae is just about ready to transition into Outland.

The next expansion will come soon enough.  And when it gets here, I want it to be new and exciting.  I want to be surprised by things, and enjoy the discovery of just what all has happened since we pwnt Arthas (which we haven’t even DONE yet).

Planning out how my class will or won’t work in an expansion that WILL change drastically between now and it’s release is a waste of my time. I can do all the planning I want – and then see it all go up in smoke when someone changes their mind later on.

So I’m not interested in knowing every nitty gritty detail of the next expansion.  Doing so steals a lot of the joy that I get out of discovering things on my own.  It’s the same reason I don’t play on the PTR, or do new bosses on the test realms.

Will I read about it?

Eh – a little, if I get bored and am not getting bombarded by OMG BLIZZCON constantly. I might even talk about it with a few friends, because, as a blogger, I really do need to keep on top of the major currents of the game.

Will it get forced on me from every angle, resulting in my dropping out of chat channels, not logging in to twitter, and avoiding chatrooms for a week so I don’t have to listen to the same info get hashed and rehashed and rehashed over and over again?

I realize that this secret that I have is an unusual one – that “everyone” loves patch notes, loves to speculate wildly, to spend hours getting their blood pressure up about how some change is AWFUL or AWESOME or OMG – but I’m not “everyone”. If reading about patch notes and making crazy speculations and drooling over the new expansion announcements makes you happy?  Go for it!  There are many people that will enjoy the same kinds of discussions!

I want to enjoy what I have now, and I’ll enjoy what’s coming when it gets here.

(My other secret is that I /am/ looking forward to the information about Diablo III that will be coming at Blizzcon.  I’m not actively playing Diablo right now, and I’m looking forward to the new game releasing sometime next year or so.  But I still won’t be compulsively refreshing the webpages or watching the live feed for it! We have months to read about and get used to these changes!)

  1. Ya, I was (still am) a huge Diablo fan and definitely am the most excited for the Diablo news at Blizzcon. Hopefully there is a playable demo and a beta key! 😀 You’ll definitely want to avoid twitter if you don’t want to hear Blizzcon news. I remember last year was insane on twitter.

I don’t blame you for not wanting to spoil the surprises for yourself although as a blogger, it’s a tough stance to take and as you’ve admitted you’re going to be almost forced to talk about some stuff.

Enjoy your week of unconnected-ness 😉

  2. Diablo 3 is going to take over my entire life (and Val’s, no doubt). 😀 I can’t wait!

Things I am excited about in-game right now: Leveling up my warlock so she can finally RP with her in-game husband again! Finally doing Wrathgate with my dwarves! Getting my paladin leveled up and sending her back to PvP — not necessarily in that order. (Now that you can level in battlegrounds, I’m tempted to just respec her to a holy PvP build and run with it!)

(Oh, speaking of paladin PvP healing builds, do you have any opinions on that? I haven’t tried BG healing since, er, before Burning Crusade, but I am definitely interested in going back to it!)

  3. /facepalm — and TRI, of course! The new instance is lots and lots of fun.

  4. I know how you feel… and I’m even GOING to Blizzcon! 😛 To be honest, I’m more excited about the rumours just becoming fact or fiction officially than knowing what the expansion is.

I’m too sick of people thinking they know everything about what’s coming next, when nothing has really been confirmed… it’s one of the reasons I don’t visit mmo-champion, it’s always full of “OMG LOOK WHAT’S COMING!!” I’ll find out when it’s time… speculation takes too much energy for no gain at all!

Of course I will get excited about whatever they do announce, most likely, but I won’t go searching for rumours or every last detail – it’ll all be available when it’s available, and that’s soon enough for me! 🙂

  5. Amen, Anna! As I tweeted last week, I’ll care after I get the expansion installed, and not a moment sooner.

As for Diablo…meh…not a fan, but I understand those who are. Enjoy! 😀

  6. Ive never played Diablo. Is it something I should try or avoid so I maintain a semblance of a personal life afk?

  7. @Mac –

Diablo, as it’s not an MMO, but is playable online, is a really fun game for me to de-stress, but it doesn’t have the same kind of “log in and grind” aspects that WoW has. At least Diablo II doesn’t. If you can pick up a DII/LoD Battlechest, the old game is still a great deal of fun actually. (It also has a definite “end” – unlike WoW? The single player game can, and does, end.)

So I highly recommend it, if only for demon smashing stress relief.

But then I’m very VERY biased against Diablo, as it’s the first video game I really fell into, and the first video game that Spaceship Husband and I played together (on two different sides of the country at the time).

  8. Yumm-Saron Veggie Stew.

I think I have found my superior at the most awful (yet delightful) puns known to humankind. Many kudos, Anna. Many kudos, indeed.

  9. @Beej – I did not, in fact, invent that pun. You can thank Aleros, the Old Dirty Druid (http://olddirtydruid.blogspot.com/) and Thantrus for that one.

  10. Funny thing is, my druid Shaur actually liked the stew. Just please don’t tell her what was really in it. >.>

I’m in the same boat- I don’t really care what people are saying yet about the next expansion. I have a fresh level 80 to play with, 3-4 other alts I’d like to get to 80 and gear up, new instance stuff to see, RP to do, titles to earn (finally!), etc., etc.

Last year for Wrath I did get really excited, even got into the open beta to see what was going to happen. Right now, I’m kinda eh. Considering that we haven’t even seen the inside of Icecrown Citadel yet, I think the next expac is probably still a ways off, so getting excited now will just result in burnout long before it arrives.

And my death knight Arvoss is about ready to hit Outlands too. Only reason he hasn’t gone yet was for RP purposes. Feel free to say hi if you see him. 🙂

  11. I’m sort of with you and not with you.

I’ve still got loads to do in Wrath. I’m looking forward to exploring the 3.2 content, let alone 3.3 or a new expansion.

But, on the other hand, I do like to have a general sense of where we’re going, so I am looking forward to the Blizzcon announcements, and I’ll probably post about them a little. But that’ll be it, for the same reason I don’t do betas or PTRs* – I like to do most of my learning in the game.

*Hell! No! We won’t go! 😉

  12. …wait wait wait. YOU’RE Shaurria?! Hello Kitters!!

  13. I agree, there’s just way too much to do in Wow. Imagine picking up Wow for the first time now, there probably enough content to last you 3 years (allot of it grinding).

Like you said even for veterans like yourself, there’s still plenty to do like work on alts.

At least with Diablo there is a end.
